Let’s imagine that the righteous Left of Facebook have successfully coerced John Lewis into redistributing this 7 million quid.
This is what happens: JL makes a loss at Christmas because they have no seasonal marketing. Their profits fall, along with the corporation tax they pay. Head office demands that the marketing department makes cuts, and within weeks the team is halved. That’s a dozen tax payers now receiving jobseekers allowance. HMRC’s net sum received through JL’s monetary success (i.e. VAT, corporation tax and it’s employees income tax etc.) is rather less than usual.
If you agree this is fair enough for John Lewis, you’ve got to agree with it for all business. And if you agree with the sentiment for a marketing budget, then surely for all other departments…
If the Left of Facebook redistributed the budget for every department in every business, the UK (and every elderly person) would lose an awful lot this Christmas. There would be no ‘gaining’ involved. Money, as we all know, does not grow on trees. Do not hit the wealth creators.
